August TBR
Talk to me about books and a few books I'd like to read soon
It’s been a wild number of weeks in my life, so I haven’t shown up here or been able to make the time to read these books, but I thought I’d let you in on the ones I would love to read soon!
Are any of these on your TBR?!
Let’s talk about the books. . .
8 Rules of Love
By Jay Shetty
I’ve really been enjoying listening to Jay’s podcast On Purpose recently and I’d love to read more about what he has to say on relationships. I also really enjoy reading some of his snippets of wisdom on Instagram and a lot resonate with me, so I’m interested to see if the book can teach me, challenge me and perhaps I’ll also find some reassurance in it too.
I Will Teach You To Be Rich
By Ramit Sethi
Another podcast discovery. I recently listened to Steven Bartlett’s conversation with Ramit on The Diary Of A CEO. I don’t think this podcast episode is something I’d usually gravitate towards, but for some reason I started listening and was really intrigued by Ramit’s philosophy around money and the whole discussion.
I think my relationship with money is something that stills needs a fair bit of unpacking as I get older, and so I’d like to try this read, and maybe listen to or look into a few more financial philosophies, as such.
Attached
By Amir Levine and Rachel S.F. Heller
I keep going back and forth on whether to pick this one up. I’m talking — over years! I’ve heard and read about attachment styles in snippets and I’m wondering whether there’s a real need to read the whole thing, if I’m being honest. But something often draws me to it. If there’s a lot more to be understood, then I’d love to get into it.
Has anyone read this one?! What did you think?
Currently Reading
Think Again
By Adam Grant
I really like the concept of this book but I haven’t managed to get really into the details yet, although I’m not too far through.
Again, I like reading snippets of Adam’s thoughts on the internet and so this lead me to pick this one up.
I also think after picking it up, I was quite quickly out of the right head space for this kind of read. Maybe it’s a DNF for now that I will come back to - nothing to do with the book and more to do with me. Does this often happen to you?
As you can tell, I’m feeling pulled towards non-fiction at the moment. This could quickly change once I’ve got my teeth into a couple, but I’d love your non-fiction recommendations nevertheless.
What’s been one of your most life-changing non-fiction reads?
What are you currently reading or hoping to read soon?
I’ve also noticed that Carrie Soto Is Back is now out in paperback, so I might get back into some fiction starting here!
More on Books
I’ll leave you with a few posts you can read next for more bookish content:
Quick Reviews #1
I thought I’d mix up the kind of book reviews I share with you here on The Write Up, to keep it fresh, and mainly also because I haven’t felt able to make enough time recently for my usual detailed notes — I still wanted to share these books with you.
What I've Been Reading Recently
I’ve got two fiction and two non-fiction reviews for you that I’m excited to share. One non-fiction I’ve been anticipating for a long time, I did get round to Lessons in Chemistry (Spoiler: What a joy!), as well as Conversations on Love and The School for Good Mothers.
1 Month 4 Books
In yet another quest for accountability, I thought I would challenge myself to read 4 books this March so that I could bring you my thoughts on what I’d read! My reading routine had taken a backseat over the previous month or so — really, I needed an excuse to curl up with a book a bit more often.

Currently reading a novel called Euphoria based on Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes that I expected to like more than I do but I still like it enough to keep reading it.
Looking forward to reading Plath's letters / diaries. Also in non-fiction I have Creating Minds which is about creativity among geniuses, Life B which is a memoir of overcoming double depression, and How to Taste by Mandy Naglich.
My own new non-fiction book, The Artist's Mind, goes on blog tour here on Substack starting on Tuesday and I'm so excited for that!

Hey Jess, it's nice to have you back 🥰
Thanks for sharing these books! I've been compiling a book list myself so I'll be sure to look at these. I need more non-fiction in my life.
P.S Carrie Soto Is Back is great ☺️
